What S197 Mustang is the best that's Supercharged and Why?

So recentally I have been looking at BOSS 302's and GT500's and stumbling across Roush 427R, 428R, and 429Rs for really reasonable prices for the power they put down. I have also been finding Saleen S281s in the same price range. Now granted they have a little millage but hey it means they were enjoyed.

Now in reality all these cars make about the same power as a GT500 maybe a little less but in the Top Gear segment in 2007(08?) when they got the GT500 it was slower then the Roush. So I ask if you were to have one of these samples as a DD/Track/Weekend go to show car. What one would you own?

P51 roush rare but nice. Personally I’d get a Used 08 to 12 Shelby Gt 500 just for resale reasons.

I’d go with the Vista Blue one. I tend to shy away from Saleen products due to all the financial problems they’ve had, although that clearly matters less as the car gets older. I’m also slightly biased toward the Roush products!

Yes, 2014 Stage 3. I don’t think the Hyper appearance packages were offered in 2014, but I could be wrong. It’s a lot of fun to drive.

Based on the 5 minutes of googling I’ve done, I would pick one of the 427R. Less bling, more suspension upgrades to go with the engine. It may not have the rarity of the 429R, but since I would be interested in a driver, not a show piece, I don’t care.

True but those cheap 427s have the 4.6 3 valve which isn’t a bad motor but its not in the same league as a 5.0 coyote. If your looking to stay under 30000 get a track pack coyote. Seen some great deals lately as everyone wants the s550 now. Plus lots of room to grow and no heat soak issues.

Personally, I’d stay away from Saleen. They make cool cars, but I don’t really want to have to source stuff from a company that is pretty much constantly circling the drain.

I also am not a big fan of the 427R stripes down the side. Looks too similar to a Boss 302. Vista Blue is a sexy color, though.

Ok, I’m going to pitch in here just in case you are sort of considering a Roush car. I own an ‘04 Roush 380R...pretty much the same idea as these but before the S197 platform. They are certainly fun to drive, though there are a couple things to think about.

Parts are majorly difficult to get hold of years down the road. Roush itself couldn’t figure out where my flywheel came from and/or what clutch was originally in the vehicle. Only one company makes replacement brake rotors that fit and they charge $660 a set. Other things like the supercharger accessory mounting fixtures and such are impossible to buy at this point, so if they ever break I’m hosed. As a result, I’ve ended up changing a lot of the parts out for other aftermarket stuff as a result of regular maintenance and light upgrades.

Another thing to think about is how the power is being made. Roush essentially slaps on a supercharger and a generic calibration so these cars will make power but it’s quite hard on untouched components.

Ok...lecture/rant over. To answer the actual question, I’d probably go for the Saleen. Always thought the S281 looked pretty cool.

No mods yet. It relatively painless to bump it to 625 hp (Stage 3, phase 2) but I just haven’t done it. Moving to Stage 3, phase 3 (675 hp) voids all the warranties, so I figure I’ll wait until the warranties are over and then add some mods or sell it.
